Happy Thanksgiving!

Yet another action packed week. Monday we had parent teacher conferences at school. The girls have a wonderful teacher, and she is really happy with their progress and transition so far this year. Amélie made her a dinner invitation that their teacher was surprised to receive. She is from Appleton, so we were in the same place for Thanksgiving.

On Tuesday I worked at TNT on the sauna trim. By the time I got back I didn't feel like cooking dinner, so we went out to eat. Fun to explore new places. Need to give this one a second try - should have ordered pizza as its a pizza place, but we tried some other things that weren't too impressive.

Wednesday was more of a normal day. Got some of the white pine cleaned up. Thursday was a day of cleaning up the house, prepping for the trip, and cooking hamburgers. I made enough for four meals, but it took almost 3 hours. They turned out well.

Friday morning we headed south. The drive to Iron Mountain was really pretty. Sunshine and snowflakes. Spent too much time at Home Depot, but got through most of my list. We then found skis, sleds, and goggles at Play It Again Sports. It's a relief to have that stuff out of the way! Now I need to learn to sharpen, adjust, and wax them.

It was a lot of fun at the Sankey's place. We started out with some amazing appetizers, Naomi's favorite beer (mine too) which is nearly impossible to find here, and a session in the hot tub. After a late dinner the girls got to sleep easily.

The Thanksgiving celebration was a blast. Started out with the Michigan - Ohio State football game before we left for the Mitchells. So much fun to watch! Finished it up after we got there. The food was great, and it was wonderful to spend time with the family. Our girls felt totally happy and comfortable. Naomi had fun too. On Sunday we stocked up on food at Woodman's and then headed to my parents house for a late lunch. Hopefully the girls will manage to get back into our routine after all that excitement!

The wet footprints turned quickly to ice.

Burger Time.

Quite the crowd!

Wrapped up some of the trim.

Snowman time!

Transitioning Again

What a week! On Monday I did not have a good day. Made lots of mistakes working at TNT. Got the wrong size hinges, forgot screws, and when I was using the nail gun with some small trim nails, I was holding two boards together and the nail was longer than they were thick. I punch through into my fingerprint. I was looking at the hole, angry with myself, when I noticed blood was dripping out the other side as well. I was surprised to see the nail had gone all the way through the middle and out my fingernail. Good thing it was a skinny nail. I put a band aid on, finished up the job, and went home a little bit early that day.

The next day was much better. It was my birthday! Great to be able to celebrate it with my parents for the first time in 20 years. We met for lunch in Christmas, a town just past TNT, and it was delicious. Whitefish from Lake Superior. On the way there, Naomi and I stopped to see an old blast furnace and walk on the beach for 10-15 minutes, but when we tried to leave, the gate was locked behind us. Naomi got ahold of the Forest Service to come and let us out. Luckily we had cell service! Pizzas for dinner and a cheesecake was a real treat. Naomi made sourdough crusts and they were delicious!

On Wednesday the girls had a half day as it is deer day, the start of rifle season, so we all got some rest. Thursday was Naomi's first day of work. Lots of new impressions, but she is off to a good start. Seems like a great position for her. Hopefully she can land an office with a window!

On Friday my friend Andrew and his colleague Scott joined us for dinner. Naomi was at kickboxing, but we had a great time. After watching Sinterklaas arrive in the NL on TV Saturday morning, I went for a long hike up Hogback Mountain with Andrew and Scott. We got lost but still found our way to the top off-trail. It was a perfect day for it. After a quick dinner, we all met them for a hockey game. NMU beat Alaska Fairbanks. It was a lot of fun!

The waves at TNT were big on Monday. So windy!

Covering up the electrical panel and piercing my finger in the process.

An old blast furnace.

Nice beach. Naomi would happily spend the morning collecting rocks.

Locked in!

Great lunch.

Delicious pizzas!

The cheesecake was tricky with American ingredients, but it turned out well.

Neighbor Rick and I took down the big white pine in our backyard.

Climbed up Hogback Mountain.

Lots of fun at the hockey game!

Mexican Demo Squad

I spent a few days working at TNT this week. It was great to have Don's help, the 84 year old dad of the owner. He is a nice guy. Amazing how much energy he has at 84! He brought some pasties to share for me and the whole construction crew that came up from Chicago to start on the art studio. They didn't like it up here at all. Bad food and nothing to do. Means they got the job done quickly!

The owner of the construction company has his own plane, so he flies up. Seems like an odd arrangement, but I guess it will work. He pointed out some problems with the sauna that we already had an eye on, but I guess when the construction work is free (NMU students) problems can be expected. The framing is way off on the inside, so doing the cedar is a challenge, and there are water issues. We got it all done except for the trim, so I will get busy with that on Monday.

Amélie was home sick on Tuesday, but other than that the girls had a good week at school. Naomi made some progress on the basement, and we got the punching bag hung up down there. Also figured out how to turn my bandsaw into a mini sawmill and sawed up some cherry from the backyard. Hopefully the bugs that were in there won't be an issue once it dries out a bit more. Yesterday we went to the Cajun restaurant to celebrate Naomi's new job! The food was incredible.

Got our votes in for the Dutch elections.

Great to have some help!

The cut is amazingly smooth.

Trying to find a time without too much wind to take down the big pine.

Got a cool Frank Lloyd Wright fireplace from TNT along with some cabinets and tables.

Amélie was in the bathroom when the food came.

Amazing dinner!

Tongue and Groove

Definitely getting into the swing of things here. Unfortunately that will all change once Naomi starts working in 10 days. Got a couple days of work in on the sauna over at TNT. It's coming along nicely. Slower than I figured though. No surprise there.

We were planning to get a floor from my aunt this week, but she said it was glued and nailed, so after they pulled it up there wasn't much to salvage. Very sad. It was a beautiful floor! My parents came up to look after the girls while we were away, so we got to take a hike together instead. Explored a really cool unofficial trail along the Dead River. Lots of waterfalls.

Halloween was a lot of fun! Went on a hay ride to get from house to house. Our neighbor hooked up his trailer to his tractor. The girls were a bit nervous, but had a great time. Amélie went home early as she wore tennis shoes instead of winter boots - we had snow! Exciting.

Dad was also able to help with the electrical in the basement, so the workshop has lights now and there is a switch in each room. One step at a time. Yesterday we went to the ski swap. Quite the event. 10 minutes early was too late, so we didn't get skis, but we did find boots and a pair of cross country skis for Naomi, and some ice skates for Abigail. After that we had a very American experience. Lunch at Hardee's. The girls like the burger but not the chicken sandwich. Now Amélie is sick, so hopefully she will be up for school tomorrow!

Happy Halloween!

Waterfall Hike.

The first snowman!

Making progress.

A sad day for me. I had high hopes for that floor!
