The Last Week

This was our last week together in the Netherlands. We started out by packing up our things and taking a train to Naomi's Mom's house. She had been preparing to host 6 people in her little place for almost two months. The setup worked out well, but it was difficult to see her in such rough shape. Naomi arranged a wheelchair for her so that she could join us on little walks that we took as she can't make it more than 100 yards on her own.

Our first full day there found us first in Enschede renting a car and then we all drove to Munster in Germany. We arrived later than planned but found a nice spot for lunch and enjoyed exploring the old city. It has four pretty churches that we took lots of pictures of.

The next day, Tuesday, we spent seeing a few sights in the neighborhood and had a great lunch at a pancake house. We ate in a 500 year old farmhouse kitchen by a fire. During the evening my family got hooked on a Dutch game called Shule (not sure how to spell it) which is sort of like a tabletop version of curling and bowling combined. Hard to describe but lots of fun - Dad even took the dimensions to see if he can make one.

Wednesday morning we had a really nice walk through the woods. They actually have a bit of forest over there, and my Dad enjoyed explaining some things to Naomi about the trees, and trying to figure out himself what the forest management plan was. Strangely enough, we came across what looked like a castle turret in the middle of the woods. Very medieval. Turns out it was the location where criminals were hung back in the day.

Thursday Naomi and I ran a few errands while everyone else biked to Delft. Friday we were glued to the couch while the rest visited the Rijks Museum. The day of rest was necessary for us. Yesterday we stuck around Rotterdam. The girls went shopping and Kalia got a tattoo while my parents and I went out for a nice lunch, visited the cigar shop and the library, finishing up at the market. We had a very nice dinner that night.

This morning Claire left and today we plan to visit Leiden. Tomorrow everyone else leaves and we have to go back to work. Fortunately I don't have students until Tuesday...I need a rest from this vacation!

Wish we had time for a drink...
