This week was just a bit too much at school - not just for Naomi and me. The kids were having more difficulty than usual with sitting still, paying attention, and working. The tensions stretched outside the classroom as well. One staff meeting involved an almost-shouting match between the management and a few teachers. The 'discussion' was about whether we turn in our absences though the traditional system of sending a list to the administration or simply enter them directly into the online system. We had heard multiple messages and the job was not getting done. This says a lot about the way the school is run - lots of confusion and conflict about a very simple task. Don't even get me started on the more difficult ones...
At home we lost our shower for a few days. It was leaking through the kitchen ceiling and fortunately, we noticed this during our move in inspection and requested to have it fixed. They said they did (but only added a little paint on the kitchen ceiling) so this week they had to come back and redo the whole shower floor. Because we noticed it before, we didn't have to pay for it. We were amazed at how dirty they made our house and they even left the shower door with an important piece missing. I guess this makes sense when you realize that these workers most likely went to a school like ours...
Yesterday we had a wonderfully relaxing day. The morning was spent hanging around watching TV. In the afternoon we enjoyed a delightful bike ride to Delft - through the trees, along the water, and past some beautiful houses. We ended up at the Ikea and this was my first time there. It was a bit of a zoo but we found some good things for the house and had a nice snack: meatballs, fries, coke, cinnamon bun, coffee, and an ice cream cone all for 3.50!
The rest of today will be spent working out at the gym, packing, eating, riding our bikes to the airport, and getting on a plane to Vienna! It sure is time for a vacation!
